A Special Day at Twycross Zoo with Hugi Hub & Hugi Nest Last week, children and families from our Hugi Hub and Hugi Nest provisions came together for a very special trip to Twycross Zoo and what a day it was. With a 70-seater coach full of excitement, laughter and anticipation, our children set off alongside their families and staff for a day many of them may not otherwise get the opportunity to experience.
For some children, busy school trips can feel overwhelming or inaccessible, and for others, trips outside of home can be difficult due to anxiety, communication needs or sensory differences. At Hugi, we believe every child deserves meaningful experiences, opportunities for connection, and memories made alongside people who understand and support them.
The day was filled with smiles, curiosity and moments of pure joy. Children explored the zoo at their own pace, met incredible animals, shared experiences with their peers and families, and most importantly felt safe, accepted and included throughout the day. From watching penguins waddling along the rocks, to feeding colourful birds and spotting giraffes towering above the trees, there were moments of awe and wonder everywhere we looked.
Staff supported children gently and flexibly throughout the day, helping them regulate, explore and enjoy the experience in a way that worked for them. One of the most special parts of the trip was seeing families relax and enjoy time together without judgement or pressure. Parents often tell us that community trips can feel daunting, so creating an environment where families feel supported matters deeply to us. A parent shared this following the trip: “What a beautiful day thanks to Hugi Hub, a SEN provision.
A beautiful trip to our second home Twycross Zoo. Fantastic to see so many SEN children enjoying the animals and having the special experience of going out to a zoo. A massive thanks to all the ladies at Hugi Hubs and Nest for making this happen, with once again just being fantastic at your job, supporting SEN children and also the families.”
Trips like these are about far more than just a day out. They build confidence, belonging, shared experiences, communication opportunities and positive memories for both children and families. They allow children to access the world in a way that feels safe and achievable. We are incredibly proud of all of our children, families and staff for making the day such a success and cannot wait to plan more community experiences in the future. At Hugi, belonging, safety, regulation, engagement and growth are at the heart of everything we do and this trip truly reflected that.
