Hygge
noun
A quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture)

What’s Hygge?
Hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”) is a Danish approach to life that focuses on feeling safe, calm and connected. In Denmark, hygge is part of everyday life, creating warm, predictable environments where people feel comfortable, accepted and able to be themselves.
At Hugi, hygge shapes everything we do. It is not just about cosy spaces, but about how a child feels in their environment, in relationships, and within themselves.

Why hygge is important to us
Many children who attend Hugi have experienced environments that feel overwhelming, demanding or unpredictable.
Before a child can engage, explore or connect, they need to feel:
• Safe
• Regulated
• Understood
• A sense of belonging
A hygge approach supports children to become emotionally available for engagement again.
When children feel this sense of calm and safety, we begin to see:
• Reduced anxiety and overwhelm
• Increased trust in adults
• More curiosity and exploration
• Greater connection with others
This is where meaningful progress begins.

How we use hygge
Hygge is woven through our daily practice in simple, consistent ways:
• Calm, low-demand environments that reduce pressure
• Strong, trusting relationships with familiar adults
• Nature-based experiences that support regulation and curiosity
• Comfortable, welcoming spaces that feel safe and predictable
Everything is designed to help children feel settled enough to reconnect with themselves, others, and learning.
When a child feels safe, they begin to engage. When they feel they belong, they begin to grow
